Description
A Rectangular voltmeter is a laboratory instrument used for measuring the potential difference, or voltage, between two points in an electrical circuit. It consists of a Rectangle-shaped meter movement, or the mechanism that displays the measurement, and a set of electrical connections. The Rectangular meter movement is typically a moving coil design, where a coil of wire rotates within a magnetic field in response to the voltage being measured.
To measure voltage, the voltmeter is connected in parallel to the points of interest in the circuit, allowing it to measure the voltage difference between them. The voltage reading is then displayed on the meter movement through a pointer and a calibrated scale. Rectangular voltmeters can be designed to measure different voltage ranges, from millivolts to kilovolts, depending on the specific application.
